THE launch of the annual International Women’s Day luncheon in aid of The Hope Foundation took place last Monday afternoon.
Organisers gathered in the relaxed surroundings of The Savoy to unveil details of this year’s luncheon which is one of only a handful of events in Ireland featured on the official International Women’s Day Itinerary (www.internationalwomensday.com).
The annual event, taking place March 3, aims to highlight the role of women in society, raise awareness for marginalised women across the world and to be a voice for the voiceless.
The popular ladies luncheon will begin in earnest with a special prosecco reception at 12pm followed by an elegant three course lunch with wine. There will also be a luxury gift bag for all those attending as well as some superb table prizes and the organisers have promised a wonderful day out for all attendees.
Humanitarian, founder of and honorary director to The Hope Foundation Maureen Forrest and Limerick author and 2016 Image businesswoman of the year Moira Geary were at the launch where it was announced they will be among this year’s speakers.
The luncheon will take place from 12pm on Friday March 3 at The Savoy Hotel in Limerick so make sure to book early to avoid disappointment as this particular fundraiser sells out quickly. Tickets are €75 with proceeds from the ticket sales going to benefit the street children of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) with whom The Hope Foundation work on a daily basis.
For more information on the event or to book a ticket, contact Charlotte on 087-3666937,  charlotte@hopefoundation.ie  or Loretto Kennedy on 087-6957523.

The Laurel hill school’s parents advisory council announced details of the school’s annual gala fashion show last week.
The fashion show which has been running for more than 40 years is a very popular one on Limerick’s social calendar and is a joint event run by the parents council of both Laurel Hill Secondary school and Laurel Hill Colaiste.
This year there’s a lot to look forward to with over 40 students from 5th year joining models from the prestigious Holman Lee agency on the catwalk. There will be plenty of inspiration for the Debs with looks from Brown Thomas and Pamela Scotts modelled by the students. There will also be plenty of ideas for the Spring/Summer season with the Holman Lee agency models showcasing fashions from boutiques like Sinead’s in Annacotty, Lady Penelope’s Adare, Catherine McCormack, Blue Velvet, O’Donnell Boutique, Lilly, Gretta Gibbs, Aimee’s, Stitch and Connolly Man.
The models hair will be styled by Niall Colgan Hairdressing and makeup by Catherine Hickey. Shoes are by XTI and sunglasses by Hartmans.
Keanes Jewellers are also supporting the event and are kindly sponsoring the evening’s door prize.
All funds raised from the show will be used for the benefit of present and future generations of the students of both schools.
The fashion show will take place on Thursday March 2 at the Strand hotel so mark it in your diaries. Tickets are €15 and are available from both schools.

A special black tie fundraiser took place last Saturday evening as parents of children who were looked after at the Neonatal Unit at the Maternity Hospital Limerick sought to give something back.
There was great style on show at the Strand Hotel which hosted the ball with a drinks reception kicking off proceedings.
There was also a great line up of entertainment including a performance from the Unity Gospel Choir Limerick at 7pm, a delicious dinner and and an array of spot prizes and raffles. After dinner guests were then entertained by the Camembert Quartet with the Late Late Show house band keeping everyone on the dance floor until late.
Funds raised from the ball will now go directly to the neonatal unit which provides crucial expert, round the clock care to newborn babies who are born ill or prematurely.
Specifically the parents are hoping to raise funds towards an EEG unit which detects seizures in premature babies.

IRISH dance enthusiasts were in for a real treat last Friday evening as the Lime Tree Theatre hosted ‘this is an Irish dance’ at the popular venue on the South Circular Road.
Legendary Riverdance star Jean Butler created this unique new show with Belfast based cellist Neil Martin, delighting audiences with her return to the world of entertainment on tour.
According to the duo, the show explores the beautiful relationship between live music and movement and the relationship between dancer and musician. In particular the new piece explored the often unexplored bond between dancer and musician in live performance.
According to Jean, who was interviewed on Limerick’s Live 95fm ahead of the much awaited show, the concept is also about exploring who is leading and who is following. The show, which is a must for fans of Irish music and Irish dance, also opens up a conversation about the relationship between music and movement, movement and sound, sound and space, space and sculpture, sculpture and body, body and instrument, cello and cellist, cellist and dancer, and ultimately, a man and woman.
Lime Tree Theatre at MIC proved the perfect backdrop for this exciting new show and as you can see from our photos, the audience in Limerick enjoyed it thoroughly.

Furthermore, its producer Alice O’Farrell and her daughter, Louise Tsang of Limerick Post, are taking The Cookbook on tour locally for an entertaining, food-rich series of events at restaurants that contributed recipes or kitchen wisdom to its colourful pages.

A media launch in Jasmine Palace on Monday 20 was the platform for the news that promises delicious feasts,  a themed atmosphere, the velvety tones of Liam O’Brien and the chance to support local cancer units. All photos are by Keith Wiseman.

Predictably, ticket proceeds and book sales will go to The Cookbook’s dedicated charities, The Symptomatic Breast Unit and The Mid Western Cancer Foundation at UHL.

“We were delighted to be nominated in the World Gourmand Cookbook Awards for Best Design globally and for Best Fundraising Cookbook in Europe,” Alice commented. “There are only four works from Ireland that made the shortlist. The Cookbook was already named winner of both its nominated categories in the national World Gourmand Awards for Ireland for 2017 on new year’s eve”.

She warmly credits Limerick Post’s production designer Bron O’Loughlin for original graphic design that so impressed the judges.

“We are hosting our first event is in celebration of the World Gourmand Awards as the competition is being held in Yantai in China on May 27,” explains Louise Tsang. “‘A Taste of China’ will take place in the Jasmine Palace, O’Connell Street a month ahead on Thursday April 27, a sumptuous banquet of their signature dishes.

“Entertainment is going to be top notch, by Limerick’s own crooner Liam O’Brien of Bottom Dog Theatre Company who played Dean Martin in the West End’s ‘The Rat Pack’”.
