A winter break that will leave you snookered

AS the weather gets colder and the evenings grow longer, people begin looking for ways to combat the winter blues.

Some take to the streets, wearing reflective jackets and hi-vis gear, pounding the pavements and pumping the pedals as they search for physical fulfillment.

Others embark upon a period of hibernation, covering themselves with blankets, slankets, snuggies and onesies, existing solely on Pringles and Quality Street, only emerging in spring, bleary-eyed and five stone heavier.

But there is an alternative, there is a middle-ground, there is a sport that will get you out of the house without exposing you to the elements.

On Sunday, November 27, St John’s Snooker Club will hold an open day. The emphasis will be on promoting the club, recruiting new members and reminding the people of Limerick that the game still exists.

Snooker is dying out in Limerick. St John’s haven’t had a junior representative in six years, and of its approximately 50 members not one is under the age of 25.

Former international player and qualified snooker coach, Kevin McMahon, is organising the open day: “We’re passionate about snooker and if we don’t do something soon it is going to die out. So we want to see if we can encourage young lads to come in and play.”

Kevin’s focus is on attracting youngsters between the ages of 12 to 18, boys and girls, and, to that end, he is launching the brand-new St John’s Snooker Academy to coincide with the open day.

The academy will offer a structured, organised and safe environment for young snooker players to practise the game. Coaching sessions will be provided by qualified and vetted coaches with plans tailored to suit each individual’s needs. In addition, those registering will get access to the Junior Development National Programme and Republic of Ireland Billiard & Snooker Association (RIBSA) National Junior Events.

And the best thing is that it all comes at a relatively cheap price.

“It’s very inexpensive,” says Kevin. “There’s a a charge of €25 to join for the year, and a €25 sub. So for new members, junior members, it’ll be €50. That’s the cheapest, most inexpensive snooker, in the country. We’re non-commercial, non-profit, we just want to keep the society going.”

snooker-club-2For that modest investment, new members will get unlimited access to the club’s three tables from 4pm to 7pm on weekdays and from 12 noon on Saturday and Sunday. But rather than simply open the doors and let the biggest, bravest lads take precedence, the club ensures that every child gets their turn.

“We’ve a roll-on, roll-off system, so once one pair finishes, the next two go on, we’ve worked like that for years we’ve never had a problem.”

The hall will be fully supervised, with a caretaker in place at all times.

“It’ll be strict,” says Kevin. “On our open day we’ll explain to people about the membership criteria. We’ve got house rules, if there any incidents or anything like that people are brought before a committee.”

But the emphasis will always be on fun, on enjoying the game. And, according to Kevin, snooker is a game that instills certain values in those who play it: “It teaches patience, it teaches temperament, it even teaches mathematics,” he says with a smile.

However, in spite of his own enthusiasm for the game, Kevin is acutely aware that snooker is not the draw it once was.

“It had its peak in the eighties; this hall here used to be full, you couldn’t get in the door to watch the Christmas handicap final. But I don’t think the snooker bodies did enough to maintain it.”

Without a World Champion since 1997, Kevin believes that the lack of prominent Irish players has impacted negatively across all levels. Nonetheless, he defies anyone to watch the likes of Ronnie O’Sullivan or Judd Trump and “not get excited”.

“I know young lads around the country who get the bug, they get on that table and they like the sound of potting the ball; there’s nothing like it. If we can get that, it’d be great.”

7-11-16 St Johns CMWS, Mulgrave St, Limerick Picture: Keith WisemanIn an effort to nurture this kind of excitement for the game, there will be a series of special exhibitions taking place during the open day. Mark Tuite, a member of St John’s and a European Snooker Champion, will showcase his skills and he will be joined by fellow pros Frank Sarsfield and John Torpey, both of whom have represented Ireland at international level.

Also, in a throwback to the days of Jim Davidson and Big Break, there will be competitions involving potting six reds in the fastest time possible and other, similarly offbeat, challenges.

As a further testament to Kevin and his fellow committee member’s love of the game, the new Academy will be entirely self-funded. St John’s receives no external grants and relies solely on the income generated from its bingo hall and other facilities to exist.

“Generally we fund ourselves,” confirms Kevin, “it’s a community thing.”

And in keeping with this community spirit, Kevin’s ambitions for the club remain modest. “We’re not about champions, or trying to produce new players. It would be fantastic if we got someone like that, but we really want to get the participation up. We want to grow the numbers, we’d love to develop it and put it another two tables.”

The open day runs from 2pm to 5pm at St Johns CWMS on Upper William Street in the city centre. All are welcome and there will be light refreshments.

THE 33rd Limerick Literary Festival – formerly the Kate O’Brien Weekend – issued news of its variety filled four days in February at a press launch this week.

City of Bridges is the theme linking events, writers, musicians and their following from Feb 23 to 26.

Limerick Chamber’s Nigel Dugdale opened out the occasion, an appropriate invitation as he had played Nathaniel in the Beoure Company’s adaptation of a Kate O’Brien’s ‘Distinguished Villa’. Directed by Joan Sheehy, this was staged at the novelist’s former home in Mulgrave Street in 2013.

The man who wrote for Obama’s inauguration, Richard Blanco. Feb 25 at LCGA, Pery Square, 4pm

On Monday last in O’Mahony Booksellers, he perceived 2017’s international class festival in the context of “Limerick being seen as a city of huge ambition. We were not thought of highly before but that is changing radically now”.

Look forward to America’s laureate Richard Blanco making a return visit to spin his poetry in our city; to Bill Whelan rivalling RTE lyric fm’s Liz Nolan in their choice of Desert Island Discs; to The Spinning Heart’s Donal Ryan interview Cecilia Ahern on her life in writing best sellers.

There is more to anticipate. Roll up to hear Olivia O’Leary, journalist and scribe of Party Animals, open out festival detail on February 24 in LCGA, Pery Square – followed by the ‘As Music and Splendour’ recital.

Committee members for the Neonatal Unit Fundraising Ball, Liz McCarthy, Marie Healy Barron and Maria Harper.

A fundraising ball will take place at the Limerick Strand Hotel on Saturday, February 11 to raise funds for the Neonatal Unit at University Maternity Hospital Limerick.

A group of parents whose children have all passed through the University Maternity Hospital Limerick came together to organise a the ball to raise funds for the Neonatal Unit. This is their way of giving something back to the unit to show how grateful they are for the care and dedication the nursing staff and doctors gave to their babies when they were born.

The fundraisers are looking for sponsors to help with the cost of the evening to ensure that as much of the money raised from the sale of tickets and raffle prizes will go to the unit directly.

The ball will start with a drinks reception, with a performance from the Unity Gospel Choir Limerick at 7pm, followed by dinner and entertainment, spot prizes and raffles. Entertainment will be from the Camembert Quartet on the night, otherwise known as the Late Late Show House Band.

The Neonatal Unit provides expert, round-the-clock care for newborn babies who are ill or born prematurely. It has 19 baby treatment spaces, these spaces are occupied by a mix of cots and incubators.

Proceeds from the night will go directly to the neonatal unit and will not be used for the maternity services and facilities in the hospital. The unit is currently looking at getting an EEG unit which detects seizures in premature babies and it is hoped that whatever funds are raised on the night that they will go towards purchasing this machine.

Tickets for the Neonatal Unit Fundraising Ball will be €80. They will be available from Harpers at the Milk Market, Box Office University Concert Hall, Limerick Strand Hotel or you can send an email to neonatalfundraiser@gmail.com.

PATRICKSWELL GAA Club held a special Victory Dance at Fitzgerald’s Woodlands Hotel in Adare last Saturday night.
There was a superb turnout for the much awaited event which was a fitting tribute to the popularity and importance of the club in its community.
The evening was compered brilliantly by club president PJ O’Grady and special guests included Patrick O’Donovan as Minister for Sport, Deputy Niall Collins TD and Oliver Mann as County Board chairman.
The event proudly recognised the groundbreaking achievements of the 1965 and 1966 County Champions, the record-equalling 2016 County Champions and the Minor Camogie title winners of 2015.
It was a particularly memorable occasion as the players of 1965/ 1966 were awarded medals to acknowledge their legacy.  Sadly, many of the players have now passed away; however in a beautiful tribute their family members were invited to receive medals and stand in their place.  The 2016 Senior Hurling Team and 2015 Minor Camogie Team were delighted to receive recognition for their important victories and their new place in this club’s history.
Other highlights included awards for Distinguished Service to Patrick Kirby, Phil Bennis, Bernard Hayes and Mossie Carmody to commemorate their tireless years of service to the club. A special gratitude award was also given to Duggan Systems Limited, the club’s longstanding and generous sponsor. John McDermott was awarded Club Person of the Year 2016 in recognition of his superb work with the Finance Committee and his efforts in organising the acquisition of land for expansion.
Patrickswell GAA Club were delighted with the huge turnout for the gala evening and would like to thank all their members and supporters for attending.
