The University of Limerick, today, celebrated the graduation of 189 future health care leaders from the UL Graduate Entry Medical School (GEMS) and Clinical Therapies Department. Among the graduates 130 newly qualified doctors were conferred with their medical degrees as they became the 6th and largest graduating class of GEMS to date. Over 50 Clinical Therapies graduands received their awards – 27 from the MSc in Occupational Therapy and 24 from the BSc in Physiotherapy.
Speaking at the conferring ceremony Professor Don Barry, UL President, said, “The University of Limerick provides the largest graduate entry programme for medicine in the country and over the last nine years or so has proven its ability to graduate doctors who understand the scientific basis of medicine, recognise the wider social and environmental contexts in which health and illness exist and are strongly committed to public service. This is the first graduating cohort to have spent their first two years of study in our state-of-the-art medical school building on the Clare side of our campus, which has won both Irish and British architectural awards.”
Established in 2007, the GEMS programme at UL is open to graduates from any discipline and employs practical and interactive approaches to learning. GEMS has achieved its sixth continuous year of 100% employment of its EU graduates in the Irish and UK PGY1 Internship systems, as well as the highest North American matching success rate of all 6 Irish medical schools exceeding 90% first year medical employment for its Canadian graduates sustained over the last five years since non-EU students began to graduate. The programme is also the only medical education programme in the country founded on the pedagogical principles of Problem Based Learning (PBL). PBL encourages team-working and self-directed enquiry, both skills being vital for their future careers in the fast moving world of medicine.
“Increasingly, health systems are addressing people’s needs at home and in primary care settings, to reduce the need for costly hospital-based services. Building on this trend, our Masters programme is unique as it attracts mature students to the profession of Occupational Therapy. Clinical Therapies’ graduates from UL are equipped to evaluate their practice, extend or refine their skills and knowledge to meet new and emerging challenges in healthcare provision.” said Professor Don Barry.
The four-year Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy is the only academic physiotherapy programme in Ireland outside of Dublin. The programme is accredited by the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists and this year celebrates the 11th year of Physiotherapy Graduates. The Master of Science in Occupational Therapy is the only graduate-entry Occupational Therapy course in the country and is accredited by both the Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland and by CORU, Ireland’s multi-professional health regulator.

THE Shannon Airport runway turned green for a spell overnight as 2,500 souls pounded out the 7.5km and 5km Bank of Ireland Runway Night Run in their ‘Irish’ singlets.
Turning up the dial in the mood for the crunch Euro group clash with Belgium, the throngs were led by Clareman and popular broadcaster Marty Morrissey for Ireland’s favourite – and original – mass participation runway event.
There was a real sense of the Euros as green – albeit of the lime variety for high-viz safety reasons – shirts spanned the starting line for the two races, which set off just either side of midnight moments after the last flight of the day landed from Malaga.
Only in its third year, the event this year drew its biggest crowd yet; double its inaugural staging in 2014 when 1,200 went to the start line in what was the first ever such event at an Irish airport.
It was all for a great cause as proceeds go to the designated charities of Shannon Group, the airport’s parent company. They are Irish Children’s Arthritis Network (iCan) and Abalta Special School for students with autism in Galway.
Participants came from as far afield as Donegal, Cork and Dublin. One crew member from that last Ryanair arriving flight from Malaga had a quick change of clothing before making the dash to the 5km starting-line just in time.
By then the crowds were already well loosened up by ‘Mr Motivator’ Richie Clifford’s warm-up and the tempo was raised again by the favourite son from West Clare.
Morrissey, who travelled from Dublin for the event, beat the old maxim that you are never a prophet in your old land as he was besieged by selfie hunters among the 2,500 crowd and even joined Mr Motivator on stage for the final part of the warm-up before taking on the 5km event.
“It was fantastic. It was my first time doing the Bank of Ireland Runway Night Run and while I wasn’t sure what to expect, I loved every minute of it. It’s novel, different and I never expected to run on a runway for sure.
“We had great fun. I met people from all over the country, not least my own county Clare. There was just a great sense of fun out there.
“The great thing is the proceeds go to two special charities so Shannon has done a great service tonight. We are very proud of Shannon, right up and down the West coast, so when invited to join the crowds here tonight, I couldn’t refuse. I’m not sure what time I did but it was my best ever time for a runway 5km,” he quipped.

The Breast Supporters in Ireland!!! – It was all about support in Co Tipperary on Sunday last at the 7th Annual Killaloe Pink Ribbon Walk at the Lakeside Hotel Killaloe for Action Breast Cancer. The crowds came in their droves to support the worthy cause and each also wearing a touch of green to insure they were ready to support the Irish boys in Lyon after the walk.
Hundreds of walkers once again turned out in damp weather.

THE BBQ Fiesta party nights at the Clarion Hotel have become a Summer favourite here in Limerick so we dropped by last weekend to catch some of the atmosphere at the popular venue.
The invitation said Hawaiian shirts were welcome and there definitely lots of people getting into the party spirit as a mixture of work colleagues and friends gathered for the occasion.
The party began straight away as arriving guests enjoyed cocktails as they mingled before enjoying a delicious BBQ food on the balcony – with a beautiful view of the river.
The next Fiesta party nights are on Friday July 29 and Friday August 26 but if you can’t make those you can always book your own BBQ.
The occasion can be tailor made for your group with the Classic, Fishy or Epic BBQ, right up to the exclusive BBQ in the Penthouse option.
Whatever you choose you and your guests can relax while the chef looks after your every whim. You can choose from cocktails, lemonade or Prosecco on arrival and when it comes to the food, pick from a huge array of choices with everything from tasty burgers in floury baps to marinated chicken in Kudo’s Asian spices. Or from juicy Toulouse sausages to traditional lamb koftas to an entire pig on a spit slow cooked for 12 hours and basted with Bulmer’s cider honey and herbs, the choice is yours. There are also plenty of dips, salads and canapés, with options for all tastes.
Other highlights of last Friday’s Fiesta BBQ party included music courtesy of a DJ until late with plenty of great spot prizes for guests to enjoy.

THE popular summer Seisiún returned to The Hunt Museum last week and will run every Thursday evening at 7.30pm until August 11.
Fans of last year’s Seisiún were delighted to see the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann concept return to this prestigious city centre venue as the series proved so popular last year. Once again there was plenty of song, storytellling, dance and Irish music to enjoy as the celebration of Irish culture returned to The Hunt Museum.
Those who attended the first week of the series of seven were in for a real treat as a fantastic array of musicians, dancers and storytellers shared their talents in a relaxed and intimate setting overlooking the River Shannon, with something for everyone of all ages in the family to enjoy.
Guests also enjoyed some light refreshments during a sos beag in The Hunt Museum River Café as they mingled and chatted before the second half of the evening.
Then guests were invited to put what they had learnt in the first half to the test as they were encouraged to take in part in the story telling, dancing and songs – making for a great night for all as you can see from our photos.
