40 years of Mexico-Ireland diplomacy celebrated

$

SAVOY Hotel was after-party to a cultural evening of classical music, Mexican foods, dance and music by the Kinvara based Gringo Kings as Mexico and Ireland continued in a series of commemorative events. Each has celebrated 40 years of the establishment of formal relations between Mexico and Ireland, Mexico being eternally fond of us, especially in the West, since the San Patricio heroes in the Conderate US army laid down arms for Mexico rather than be party to that nation’s conquest and pillage by the Americans.

See Limerick Post’s After Dark this week for the report by Catriona Tierney on Saturday 18’s concert in  St Mary’s Cathedral with Horacio Franco and Daniel Ortega.

Director of Savoy Hotel Ronan Branigan and his wife Anne later welcomed Mexican Ambassador Carlos Garcia De Alba, the Ambassador’s partner Fiona Roche, Metropolitan Mayor Jerry O’Dea, Limerick Council CEO Conn Murray and wife Ann, Council’s Pat Daly and wife Mary, business man Gerry Power, Irish World Academy’s Oscar Mascarenes, John Horgan of Killaloe and West Cork Chamber Festivals and many more for a Latin themed party laced with Prosecco that continued into the small hours.

THE third International Film Festival here in Limerick under the mantle of Richard Harris’ colourful, high achieving legacy had its packed launch at No. 1 Pery Square. See richardharrisfestival.com for details on the ambitious programme of screenings, a suite Ireland movie premiers, talks by their producers and directors, workshops, a portrait competition dedicated to Harris, literary trail and more.

The two Limerick City of Culture bursary winning film shorts, ‘Lost & Found’, and ‘The Clockmaker’s Dream’ will screen – first outing to cast and crew but it’s an open ticket.

International class stars such as Jared Harris of Lincoln, Poltergeist and The Man from UNCLE and Sean Cronin of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation are supporting the many events plus the gala screening of ‘A Man Called Horse’ / reception night on Friday  23. This will take place at No. 69 O’Connell Street and later, at George Boutique Hotel for a ticket-only, red carpet number.

Reflecting the snowballing interest in this four day event, Thursday October 22 to Sunday 25, Dublin was platform for a parallel launch of this unfunded festival for film makers, stars and movie buffs.

LIMERICK’S ninth annual Polish arts festival was launched by the Polish Ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency Ryszard Sarkowicz at Hunt Museum on the afternoon of Thursday 15. The party adjourned to George Boutique Hotel, a principal sponsor to this fortnight-long celebration of matters cultural and intellectual of Poland, and its community in the Mid West. A reception unfolded and the Hotel is host the Ambassador and his wife as they officiate in Limerick.

The festival programme extends until Sunday 31. Today Friday 16 and for Saturday 17, it embraces workshops and lectures looking at ‘Gender in Social and Cultural Practices’. Again, The Hunt Museum is venue.

More family friendly is the Polish arts and crafts and food fair this Saturday from 10.30 am to 4pm. Janusz Biarda’s photographic show, ‘Faces of the Milk Market’ at The Gallery Market House is open on Saturdays only, until October 31.

There are also workshops and concerts at the Hunt and Dolan’s Bar, Dock Road and St Michael’s Church in Denmark Street for the bank holiday weekend and beyond.

THE first honorary consul to represent the Mexican community in the MidWest and Kilkenny has been appointed. Mr  Ronan Branigan, managing director of The Savoy Hotel Group, was invited by the Mexican Ambassador to Ireland, Carlos Garcia de Alba to take up the post this summer. On Friday October 16, the inauguration ceremony took place at his hotel on Henry Street.

Mr Branigan has a long standing familial and embassy relationship with Mexico, the world’s 14th largest economy.

A guest list of several hundred embraced Ministers, Limerick City and County Councils, the Metropolitan Mayor, TDs of all colours, representatives of the business and cultural communities, and fellow honorary consuls.

Festivities opened in the lobby with a Mexican band and a cocktail created in the colours of the national flag, prior to formal dinner with a succession of dance and music entertainment that continued into the late hours.

See the Limerick Post’s interview with Ronan Branigan and Ambassador De Alba this Thursday 22 as to their short and longer term plans to progress the consulate, operating out of The Savoy’s business suite.

The making of Noises Off

COLLEGE Players assure seasonal bliss with their premier of Michael Frayn’s ‘Noises Off’ next Tuesday 10 at Lime Tree Theatre. There’s a cast of nine professionals and semi-pros, at least five of them doubling up in role play, complicated by a split stage of rotating wonder.

We view the play-within-a-play device in all its glory and lack of, parallel with behind the scenes havoc, its drinking, affairs and visceral hate.

Dave Griffin is a first time director for Frayn’s event. Without apology, he has cast first-timer Rachel Griffin, his daughter, in with the experienced Liam O’Brien, Rebecca Murphy, Sadhbh McCoy, Chris Rowley, Padhraic Hastings and Brendan McNamara, with (slightly) younger faces on the block, Miriam Ball and Dan Mooney. Dan is fresh from directing comedy for Torch and is part of a new intake for College.

“I’ve been in the last five College Players shows,” explained Mr Griffin to Arts page about being seated in the director’s chair. “The committee sort of got together and did a little arm-twisting”.

He is better known as a singer/ actor of three decades standing in Midwest theatre groups, and took home the AIMS 2014 Best Actor for ‘The Witches of Eastwick’ with Limerick Musical Society.

Hard-working rehearsals and experienced stage management drive momentum for this immersive fun and skulduggery. Frayn is an outstanding British playwright and novelist; we glimpsed his work first here in 2014 when Bottom Dog Theatre Company staged a rehearsed reading of his ‘Democracy’ that served the text and Limerick audience well.

‘Noises Off’ at Lime Tree Theatre, November 10 to 14 at 8pm.

Sparkly circus launch for Goldilocks panto

LIMERICK Panto Society is staging a re-invented Goldilocks for its 2015/6 Christmas at Lime Tree Theatre, ‘Goldilocks – The Circus Panto’, with brilliant character (assassins!) such as Bertie Bagem and Seanie Shootem. Set aside time for razzle-dazzle dance numbers, a Circus pack of clowns and furry four-pawed friends. ‘Goldilocks  – The Circus Panto’ will run from December 27 to January 3, typically at 12noon and 4pm.

For further contemporary context, writer John Finn is mining the return of Milk Tray Man as well as austerity severity and water charges.

But from the hubba-hubba at this week’s press launch in Limerick City Inn, there will be bears in plenty, a little house in the woods and giant chorus numbers – Limerick Panto Society’s own chorus numbers 50. Two stage schools are joining in, Expressive Arts and Spotlight, to swell the rank and file on stage to well over 100.

Opening on Sunday December 27 at noon, RTE’s Emma O’Driscoll-Cronin will make a a super-blonde of Goldilocks, with Damian Shaw (the society’s able PRO) as the promised Bertie Bagem. James Corr is Seanie Shootem; Laura Hunt, Madame De Farquotte and Natasha Coughlan is Lulu. Keith McGuane is cast as Hans Treetrimmer the eccentric, while Tim Cusack returns as his 20th or so panto dame, Mrs Headlocks.

As usual, Tony Cusack leads a huge production team embracing stagecraft, lighting, costumes and sound/ music, all of them volunteers. The charity night belongs to Dóchas, working with children and adults on the Autism spectrum, to fundraise for a sensory chill-out room at their Parnell Street HQ.

Left, Yasmine McGorey, Rachael Hunt, Caitriona Flynn and Cian O'Donnell join the 120 strong cast on stage

Talking as to how Small Art Works

$

THE SMALL Art Works’ exhibition opened doors this month at CB1 O’Connell Street, with LSAD’s Aine NicGiolla Coda officiating for the select group. It brings together artists from various parts, three of these based locally: Gavin Hogg, Sheila Richardson and Nuala O’Sullivan. The Thurles man is PJ O’Connell, Dermot Browne is working out of Cork and CJ at lower Manhattan, New York.

There’s a talk at 1pm this Saturday 28, last day of SAW, by Hogg who is show organiser; free to all. “[It] will be largely focused on the different materials and techniques used by the individual artists and what qualities such materials and their manner of use might express – as opposed to just talking about the content or pictorial nature of the work, but that will also figure.

“And of course observations and questions from the audience will be welcome and I would expect the talk to last about 40 to 50 minutes depending on interaction”.

Of this exhibition, Hogg makes the observation that it “intentionally presents a selection of small scale works of art, the largest unframed dimension of any piece in the show being 45cm. The idea is to give each artist the opportunity to show several works and for the works themselves to be affordable and fit easily into a domestic setting”.

He is hoping to connect the “average viewer” with contemporary art and its different working methods as much as subject matter.

View until this Saturday 28 daily from noon to 6pm. CB1 O’Connell Street is beside USIT travel agent.

THE night of Thursday 21 at Limerick City Gallery of Art was a major one for visual arts, and for Limerick. This week saw the coming home of Ireland’s work for the 56th Venice Biennale which took place in Autumn. 400,000+ people took the time and interest to pursue its many parts in Italy – sculptural, moulded, photo-documentary, newsprint, metal works. There is even a brick salute to Wexford, and The Daily Mail’s editorial policy on specific matters.

LSAD artist/ teacher Sean Lynch, based sometimes in Askeaton but a wanderer of maps and other worlds with his wife, curator/ artist Michele Horrigan and new daughter Emily, is architect of  ‘Adventure:Capital’.

This installation sits on plinths and fills out screens and glass boxes (check Bill Clinton’s ball through bullet-proof plate) throughout the chambers of Pery Square’s ground floor. Pick up Lynch’s 12-page ‘Ireland at Venice 2015’ to appreciate its intellectual, mythological and geographical sprawl. It’s a good laugh.

Limerick Choral Festival is launched in song

DaVincenzo’s Italian Food and Wine Hall at George Boutique Hotel was glamorous backdrop to the formal launch of Limerick Choral Festival. Festival organiser Dr Michael O’Brien, who has worked with Timothy Schinnick and the late, lamented Joe O’Connor annually on this February competitive music series, was host to the well-fed event.

Members of Ancór with director Cecilia Madden attended, as did Limerick Gospel Choir and individual singers of note. The operatic Sarah Dolan gave us a turn, as did Olive O’Brien and Tracey Costello-O’Shea – whose first CD is set to be released. Organist Peter Barley of St Mary’s Cathedral was present, as was Daniel Battle, accompanist in residence to competitions for Limerick Choral Festival.

Also Teresa Delaney, secretary and PRO to the Redemptorists Campaign for the Poor; participating churches are The Redemptorists, St Joseph’s, Sacred Heart in the Crescent and The Augustinians.

The festival is running from Friday February 26 to Sunday 27 in city churches, the closing event to be evensong in St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday. It’s dedicated to sacred and more so, church, music.

Ultimate winning choir at Limerick Choral Festival receives the Joe O’Connor Memorial Trophy for a year. On Monday 15 last at the evening ‘do’, this silverware presided over Prosecco pops of news. Michael had a touching tale of how it came into being.

“Joe was diagnosed with terminal cancer two years ago and was given a short few months to live,” Michael revealed. “We decided we should honour him by creating a prize for best overall choir in his name, and got the cup designed and made. We presented it to Joe just before he died. It must have been odd, looking at a ‘memorial’ trophy called after yourself”.

Thinking ahead to 10 competition categories that are pulling in at least 50 choirs nationally, Michael was modest about the work required in drawing so much towards Limerick on an unfunded basis. “I’d like this year’s to be as fantastic as previous years,” he commented. “We have choirs coming from Sligo, from Kilkenny, from Wexford, from Tipperary”.

The biggest coup is securing the Palestrina Choir from St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral in Dublin “who are internationally renowned. Their director Blánaid Murphy adjudicated for us a few years ago and it’s wonderful to welcome her back. The Palestrina Choir concert opens the festival on Friday February 26 at 7.30pm in St Joseph’s Church, O’Connell Avenue and it is the only ticketed event in the three days of free music for all comers to participating churches”.

See the programme online at www.limerickchoralfestival.com and facebook. Palestrina Choir tickets are selling in advance at Abbey Bookshop by The Augustinians and at www.litmt.ie, €15 and €12.

ORGANISERS of the seventh annual Barrington’s Hospital Great Limerick Run are calling on volunteers to help make this year’s event another amazing success on Sunday May 1, 2016.

The biggest participation event outside of Dublin, the Barrington’s Hospital Great Limerick Run (BHGLR) includes a marathon, half marathon, relay-marathon and six mile race. BHGLR organisers say this year’s event will build on the success of 2015 and promises to be even bigger and better.

Putting out the call for volunteers, race director John Cleary explained that volunteers play a crucial and winning role for the event to operate smoothly.

“The Barrington’s Hospital Great Limerick Run could not go ahead without the amazing support of the local community in Limerick on the weekend of the event,” said Mr Cleary.

“We are looking to get volunteers for a number of sectors of the event. Volunteers are required for the day of the race as well as at our Expo event on Friday April 29 and Saturday April 30 in the University of Limerick Arena,” he announced.

Volunteer roles will range from manning water stations along the BHGLR route to the distribution of medals and refreshments at the race end.  At the Expo volunteers roles include handing out t-shirts and goody bags to participants. Every volunteer will receive a certificate from the Barrington’s Hospital Great Limerick Run acknowledging their participation in the event as well as a volunteer t-shirt and food and refreshments on the day. Health and safety training will also be provided prior to the race.

FAN tailed head-dresses, dancing girls, cowgirls and Men Wearing Stetsons enlivened the media launch of Limerick Musical Society’s latest production.

Dolan’s Bar was the familiar supportive venue for news of ‘Annie Get Your Gun’, set to shoot out the concert hall later this month, Thursday April 28, Friday 29 and Saturday 30.

Metropolitan Mayor Jerry O’Dea was favoured with launch honours, and yes, a stetson for this Des Henn directed wagon. Furthermore, LMS cracked on the whip with a table quiz on site led by  Tony Cusack, pantomime supremo and general good egg.

Look forward to 70 on stage with AIMS winning Niamh Twomey choreographing the action and Maire Keary-Scanlon over chorus and music. Music accompaniment at UCH will be courtesy of a 10-piece band.

The cast reads; Annie Oakley (Hilary Orpen), Frank Butler (Richie Hayes), Dolly Tate (Olivia Parkinson), Buffalo Bill (Steven O’Brien), Charlie Davenport (Aidan O’Connell), Pawnee Bill (Patrick Woulfe), Chief Sitting Bull (Glen Carr) and Wilson (Adrian Egan).

Sam and Sophie Duggan (on and off stage brother and sister) play the roles of Little Jake and Nellie alongside Jane Dillon in the role of Jessie and Helen Daly as Minnie.
