Last Saturday, 175 children attended Centra’s family community event in the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick, where Centra brought together some of the Brightest Stars in hurling, Limerick’s Declan Hannon and Shane Dowling and Cork legend Seán Óg Ó hAilpín. The heroes of the game were on hand to give young aspiring hurlers from Limerick clubs the chance to showcase their hurling skills.

Girls and boys from all over the county turned out in their droves to take part in the very special hurling skills session and learn from some of the best in the game. As well the skills session the children got to enjoy a great family day out that brought the whole community together with a host of entertainment on the day including face painting, a hurling simulator, music and goodie bags.

This event was supported by local Centra retailers; Regan’s Centra Pallas Green, Rodahan’s Centra Ennis Road, Ryan’s Centra Raheen, Hodkinson’s Centra Patrickswell, Kennelly’s Centra Dooradoyle, Redy’s Centra Foynes, Rodahan’s Centra Woodview Shopping centre, Chawke’s Centra Castletroy, Ryan and Hanly’s Centra Askeaton, O’Sullivan’s Centra Clarina, Casey’s Centra Dock Road and McGrath’s Centra, Bruff.

This year, Centra celebrates their fifth year as sponsor of the GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship and throughout the summer, Ireland’s largest convenience retailer are bringing together the brightest stars of hurling for 16 fun community events in GAA clubs all-round the country.

Centra, at the heart of communities throughout Ireland with 465 stores nationwide, is continuing to work with the GAA to promote and develop the game of hurling for all ages right across the country; in both developing and well established hurling counties.

For more information on Centra’s community events throughout the summer pop into your local Centra store, go to www.centra.ie or find ‘Centra Ireland’ on Facebook and Twitter.

The Giants Journey to Limerick

RDL Liverpool -22In less than six weeks’ time, the biggest event of Limerick City Culture 2014 ‘The Giants Journey’ will take place 5th, 6th and 7th September . It will be the single biggest event in Limerick since the Pope visited in 1979 with over 100,000 visitors.

Today the huge giant Grandmother that will be live on Limerick’s city streets for 72 hours, was unveiled in Liverpool. A captivated audience of over 200,000 people young and old lined the streets of Liverpool today to witness the magical awakening and voyage of the 85 year old Grandmother.

Having been sleeping soundly for the last two day in St. George’s Hall in the city, she mischievously opened her eyes and awoke, greeting mystified revellers with her daring yet enthralling twenty five foot stance.  With small feeble steps aided by her walking stick, her body disjointed by age, she took to her enormous twenty one foot wheel chair, as she began her journey on the  streets of the city. The atmosphere was palpable as spectators looked astounded and genuinely moved by her magical presence. With over 70 Lilliputians, (people who operate the Giant), enabling her street voyage, the Giant had a well-earned siesta at Salthouse Dock.   En route, the endearing old lady embarked from her wheel chair, balancing precariously on her walking stick clutching it with her vainy arthritic hand, to interact with crowd indulging in some of her loveable Granny characteristics. When she gets worked up though she could lift an elephant!

Everyone, young and old, was left with a truly valuable and memorable experience from this magical encounter.

Limerick awaits with bated breath the visit of this Irish/Bretagne Grandmother in her granny green dress embellished with shamrocks. She will act out an original tale, developed and specially scripted for Limerick. The city will be transformed  as the massive Granny rambles through the streets cared for by hundreds of Lilliputians, transfixing audiences for a weekend of  free entertainment as they follow her as she eats, drinks and sleeps on their streets.

Royal de Luxe has played to huge crowds in far flung locations such as Mexico, Chile, New Zealand and also closer to home in London and Liverpool. Despite demand for performances worldwide, Royal de Luxe will only perform in 3 countries this year; France, England  and Ireland. Each territory where the troupe has performed, has reported a huge influx of visitors resulting in major economic benefits. According to a report commissioned by the Liverpool City Council in 2012, the troupe performed to over 800,000 people and earned in excess of €35 million in associated revenue.  According to the report over 80% of the visitors that came to Liverpool travelled specially to see the Giant. The Limerick version will expect to see in excess of 100, 000 visitors making it the largest public event ever hosted in the streets of the city. The Royal de Luxe event is expected to generate a pro rata spend similar to its UK counterpart.

fusionshooters, Editorial Photographer, Limerick, Ireland , MunsterDespite a technical malfunction that resulted in a two hour delay and a change of route that left thousands of spectators disappointed, record crowds lined the streets and quays of Limerick to wish Grandma Giant farewell on one of the hottest days of the summer.

According to Limerick City of Culture organizers, there were over twice as many people at the three days of the Giant’s Journey through Limerick as there were for the Pope’s visit to Limerick in 1979.

Mike Fitzpatrick director of Limerick City of Culture commented, “The attendance at the event has exceeded all our expectations with in excess of 200,000 visitors over the weekend. It has been a massive boost for the economy. The Granny has captured the hearts of not only those who visited the city but overseas with photographs, videos and images being shared throughout the world, putting Limerick firmly on the map”.

Grandma Giant ventured across the whole city for the three days before laying down to rest in her bed on O’Connell Street this evening

Fancy dressing up for a good cause this Halloween then “Trick or Treat for Temple Street” is just the ticket.

The charity event will be held on the bank holiday weekend at the Orchard Bar. The Halloween fancy dress fundraiser is organised by local man Killian Fitzgerald to raise money for Temple Street Children’s University Hospital.

Killian said; “My reason of choice for this Charity, Temple Street Children’s University Hospital is because I, myself have been a patient for 21 years with a life long condition called Phenylketonuria (PKU), which is a metabolic disorder. All the staff [at Temple Street Hospital] were delighted with last year’s success and they are delighted to hear that we will be fundraising for their much needed funds.”

Entertainment on the night will be from Voice of Ireland Winner 2013, Keith Hanley, Magician Steve Spade and singer/songwriter Rachy P, followed by DJ KESH.

The event takes place in the Orchard Bar on Friday October 24 at 9pm. Entry fee is €10 with access to Crush 87 niteclub. A ‘best dressed’ competition will also be held on the night. For more information contact Killian Fitzgerald on 085-7336654 or TrickorTreat Limerick on Facebook.
